Session background

Boosting the reliable use of technology in the public sector, whether to deliver public services or improve efficiency, requires considering citizens’ views. To include citizens as stakeholders, cities need to build a participatory local digital rights ecosystem that ensures equal information positions and facilitates inclusive methods of participation and debate. In doing so, cities face significant challenges.

The aim of this dialogue session is to hear about the experience of cities with citizen engagement.

The dialogue is for city representatives only.

Agenda

The opening remarks by Kars Alfrink, PhD researcher at TU Delft working on contestable AI, will delve into these challenges to open a debate between cities and experts to identify methodologies and practices that facilitate citizens’ participation in promoting responsible use of technology in the public sector. (15mins)

During the second part of the session, we will have an interactive discussion with all participating cities. This part aims to share experiences from different cities to identify and weigh up challenges and discuss with cities the different methods to address these challenges. Through this debate, we hope to learn from the attendees which specific issues related to citizen participation are most challenging and worth working on possible solutions, thus organizing the following session on this specific topic with experts and practitioners.  (45mins)

Inputs from this dialogue will inform the development of  the Cities Coalition for Digital Rights Mission 1 – Fostering transparency and participation in cities.
